Escalating Threat of Ozone Depletion Dr. Arvind Singh The stratospheric ozone layer depletion would lead to eye cataracts, skin cancer and weakening of immune system in human beings. Furthermore, it would induce mutation in microbes and reduce the algal productivity causing a decline in global fish production. The increased level of UV radiations following ozone thinning would cause a decline in productivity of agricultural crops due to reduced leaf size, stunted growth and increased susceptibility to diseases and pests. Stratospheric ozone layer serves as shield against the harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiations emanating from the sun. The UV radiations are low wavelength radiations extr...

Save the Jerdon’s Courser -Dr. Arvind SinghJerdon’s courser is a rare species of bird currently found in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. The bird was discovered by the Surgeon-Naturalist Thomas C. Jerdon in 1848 and was seen a few times up to 1900. Thereafter it was considered extinct. However, the bird species was rediscovered in January 1986 by Bharat Bhushan (an Ornithologist from Bombay Natural History Society) in Cuddapah District of Andhra Pradesh with help of a local bird trapper named Aitanna from village Reddipalli. In 1988 the Indian Post Service released a stamp to commemorate the rediscovery of Jerdon’s courser. The scientific name of Jerdon’s courser is Rhinop...

The Corbett National Park is a primal jungle made famous by the adventurous exploits of Jim Corbett—a hunter who later turned into an ardent conservationist. Till 1820, it was the private property of local rulers before being taken over by the British Raj. The British rulers mercilessly felled the forests for timber. In 1858, a plan was drawn up for protecting the forests and by 1879 it had been declared as a reserved forest. In 1934, the Park was declared a National Park and Jim Corbett helped define the boundaries. In 1957, after his death, the Park was renamed in honour of Jim Corbett’s memory. In 1973, the Park became the first Tiger Reserve of India under Project Tiger, as an ende...

The disease was discovered by French army surgeon named Alphonse Laveran who found that the condition is caused due to certain members of a family of protozoans parasites which enter the red blood cells. ALLELOPATHY: ANIMOSITY AMONGST PLANTS FOR GROWTH -Dr. Prashant Arya Animosity is prevalent amongst plants – Trees just like human beings and animals. This speciality has been discovered in a few plants only. Fungi, micro-organism, paramecium and a few angiosperms (the plants which seeds are covered) are a few forms of plant kingdom which have this sort of speciality. Such plants with the salient features/speciality release a particular chemical in soil and surrounding environment; as a result it affects the growth and development of other plants. This queer but surprising behaviour of plants has been termed as ‘Allelopathy’ and the released chemical is known as ‘Allelo-...
